Understanding Slope

The slope of a line characterizes the direction and steepness of the line. It is often denoted by the letter m. The slope is calculated as the "rise over run", or the change in y divided by the change in x between any two distinct points on the line.

The Formula

m=y2y1x2x1m = \frac{y_2 - y_1}{x_2 - x_1}

Where:

  • (x1,y1)(x_1, y_1) are the coordinates of the first point.
  • (x2,y2)(x_2, y_2) are the coordinates of the second point.

Interpretation

  • Positive Slope: The line goes up from left to right.
  • Negative Slope: The line goes down from left to right.
  • Zero Slope: The line is horizontal.
  • Undefined Slope: The line is vertical.
