Understanding Molarity

Molarity (M), or molar concentration, is a measure of the concentration of a solute in a solution, or of any chemical species, in terms of amount of substance in a given volume.

The Formula

$M = \frac{n}{V}$

Where:

M: Molarity (moles per liter, mol/L or M)
n: Number of moles of solute (mol)
V: Volume of solution (Liters, L)

Importance

Molarity is the most common unit of concentration in chemistry. It allows chemists to relate the volume of a solution to the number of moles of solute, which is essential for stoichiometry calculations in reactions occurring in solution.
