Molar Mass Calculator

Calculate the molar mass of any chemical compound.

Formula

What is Molar Mass?

Molar mass is a physical property defined as the mass of a given substance (chemical element or chemical compound) divided by the amount of substance. The base SI unit for molar mass is kg/mol, but it is usually expressed in g/mol.

Calculation Method

To calculate the molar mass of a compound:

  1. Identify the elements present in the chemical formula.
  2. Find the atomic mass of each element from the Periodic Table.
  3. Multiply each atomic mass by the number of atoms of that element in the formula (the subscript).
  4. Sum the results to get the total molar mass.

Example: Water (H2OH_2O)

  • Hydrogen (H): 1.008 g/mol ×\times 2 = 2.016 g/mol
  • Oxygen (O): 15.999 g/mol ×\times 1 = 15.999 g/mol
  • Total: 18.015 g/mol
